Berry au Bac - En première ligne
En 1917, c'est à Berry-au-Bac qu'eut lieu la première offensive blindée de l'histoire militaire. Les chars d'assaut, des chars Schneider au nombre de 132, furent amenés sur place pour la grande offensive du Chemin des Dames le 16 avril 1917. Leur utilisation n'a pas été très profitable sur le moment puisque les unités d'infanterie n'avaient pu suivre leur avance[8]. Sur les 132 chars engagés, 57 ont été détruits par les Allemands, 56 ramenés du combat (44 en panne dans nos lignes). |
